Quality Engineer

May - August 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

Experience in the working world. Working with professionals is fun because everyone knows their job really well and is willing to help you every step of the way.

What I wish was different

I am not a fan of the Quad Cities area. Unfortunately, John Deere is headquartered there. But the people in the area are very friendly and there is a great food scene!

Advice

Be bold. Just because you're an intern doesn't mean you can't have a lasting impact on your company. After all, it is just as much your company as anyone else you work with.

Software EEG Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

The work I did was actually meaningful. Which I feel is rare now especially with software development. I was given a project to complete over the summer and got to see it through the entire development process from analysis to implementation to testing. Everyone was super nice. Scheduling meetings with full-timers was easy and they helped me understand the process of development and didn't make me feel like a total idiot.

What I wish was different

The work environment was a bit dull. I was in an older building and the layout was not adaptable for an agile development set up. People were compartmentalized which made sprints less natural and awkward. That being said, they are going through a lot of changes to the department I was in so I think they're in the process of changing this.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. A lot of people have worked there and seen multiple iterations of projects go through. They'll always be open to answering your questions and you'll learn more from them and have a more meaningful experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

Part-Time Student Worker

May 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

It was an extremely welcoming and friendly environment. From the start everyone wanted to ensure I was transitioning well. The work within the job was also rewarding. Although I did have some administrative work to do, I am given projects to work on that real tax analyst in the department would typically complete. This job's entire purpose is to prepare you for future employment with the company, so everything you do adds value to the workplace and people treat you as an equal team member.

What I wish was different

I don't think I would change anything.

Advice

Be confident from the beginning. I began work with a shy attitude, as it was my first accounting experience. The sooner you can showcase your abilities confidently, the sooner you will given more challenging work.

Marketing/Management Intern

March 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

I've learned a lot about how and why we market products. As well as I have learned so much about sales and communicating with customers. At the John Deere Store, we want to make every customer feel special since most of our customers travel across the country or world to shop at our store. We want to make every experience memorable for our customers. We do this so that when they return to our store they know that they will be treated with the very best customer service.

Future Development

May - August 2018 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

The people there were wonderful to work with. They were patient and always willing to help out if you did not know how to do something or were stuck on a problem. The test bays were top of the line, and they gave me a project that is beneficial to the company.

What I wish was different

I spent a lot of time on the computer doing design work. I am not a big fan of siting at a desk all day, so I would have liked something where I could move around more and be outside.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help or clarification. The other engineers want you to succeed and they are happy to help a young guy or gal out.

IT Analyst

June 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

It had a very important team setting. The Team setting is vital for the departments success. I liked how welcoming and knowledgeable and helpful all my colleges were. It was a difficult job to try and absorb all at one time but it was an interesting experience being able to contact different people all across the world and work with others to solve whatever issue was at hand.

What I wish was different

I'm not sure if I would change my experience. It was an experience where I had no background knowledge and I'm not sure if there was anything I could have done to better prepare. It was learning on the fly and that was fun, there were always new challenges that popped up and there's always different ways of trying to solve it.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions ever, the more you can learn the better.

Data Analytics Intern

January - September 2018 • Champaign, IL

What I liked

This opportunity allowed me to experience Champaign during the summer. I got to work in a laid-back team environment that allowed me to build strong relationships with my coworkers.

What I wish was different

The projects that we worked on at John Deere were more long term which meant that I would be spending numerous months on each project and if it was something that I did not immediately like there would not be anything I could do about it.

Advice

Go into any internship with an open mind and most importantly focus on building relationships and building your network because ultimately thats what will help you get your next internship and ultimately a job some day.

I wish I got to work with more interns throughout the whole summer.
