Melaleuca

Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

Melaleuca has a fantastic internship program. I was not treated like a typical intern. I was given responsibilities and exciting projects that actually had valuable impact on the company. This company is established, but small enough to where you can see your results upfront. I had really great mentors that were generous with their time and allowed me to be creative while also teaching me some valuable technical and analytical skills. Melaleuca really engages their interns too with interesting training lectures and luncheons with executives. I was very impressed with the organization and valuable experience I had with Melaleuca.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't have changed much, I only wish I had a little more time there.

Advice

Be a sponge. There are so many things to learn and soak in from this experience. If you stay open-minded and sharp, you will be surprised by the end of how much you've learned.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

The work was very hands on and fast paced. I was able to get involved in a variety of projects with the company and then I was also able to do lots of cross trainings within the company to learn more about it as a whole.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have more day-to-day tasks that I could have responsibility over and that carried weight in making decisions in the short term.

Advice

The more people you talk to and the more questions you ask the more you'll get out of your experience. Don't be afraid to speak up and get to know those around you.

Brand Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

The people I worked with were amazing. There is such a good culture of teamwork and unity as well as a good balance between hard work and fun. The projects I was asked to work on covered a variety of marketing experience from developing brand architecture to develop brand growth strategies to researching innovative packaging. I felt my work had the potential to make a large impact on the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job posting gave a little more information about the type of work a brand marketing intern would be doing.

Advice

I know you've probably never heard of Melaleuca like I never had, but apply for this internship and you'll quickly figure out that interning with a multi-billion dollar consumer product company with values as great as this one is an opportunity you do not want to miss out on.

International Brand Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

I enjoyed the freedom to take charge of my own project. I was able to identify the steps I needed to take to accomplish my project and to go the extra mile, and then act independently to get there. Throughout the internship, I acquired a general knowledge of international business and operational marketing, supply chain, finance, and accounting. The wide range of exposure was vital to my education here at Melaleuca. I also had the opportunity to develop a wide range of excel and data analytics skills, building reports for managers from confusing and often inaccurate data sets, which has been an invaluable addition to my skill set.

What I wish was different

I wish I had other interns to work with. All summer, it was just me on a project and I felt like I missed out on an opportunity to work in a team, even if just for something small. When it's just me, the workload is a lot heavier, too. Sometimes I struggled with finding a creative outlet while on my project, but often found ways to make it fun.

Advice

Get to know a lot of your coworkers and don't sweat the small stuff. Your higher-ups want you to succeed. Don't take things too personally and keep your head up.

R&D Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with experienced professionals and having projects to work on. Overall, I felt like my projects added value to the company and the experience I gained from working in a professional environment helped me transition from college life to the real world. I learned a lot of new skills including how to better use Excel, how to be assertive and organized, and how to interact with my colleagues. Also, Melaleuca does a great job taking care of their employees. I ate great food at the cafeteria and enjoyed the awesome events they hosted.

What I wish was different

Windows, walks, and working with people. Working in R&D meant working in a basement at Melaleuca because of the needed security. Not having windows was a challenge, but something that can't really be changed. Also, I felt like there was too much sitting and working on the computer- another thing that just comes with the job. Walking breaks were definitely a must. In addition, I would have wanted to do more work with people. Either working alongside a mentor on their projects or working with another intern on projects would have made the experience more fun and productive.

Advice

Be assertive, be candid, and learn all you can.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

The team is willing to let me work on their assigned tasks, giving me opportunities to learn and grow from the day-to-day grind work, and not only the other assigned projects I'm working on.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more proactive towards the start of the internship, asking questions and boldly volunteering to be involved with more of the tasks associated with each role, instead of simply 'cross-training' around the department and watching the other team members explain things as they did them. I should have inserted myself into the role and asked to 'drive' during those trainings.

Advice

Be willing to try something, even if not entirely sure about how you'll perform. Allow for failed attempts to be valuable learning experiences, instead of waiting until you're 'sure of things.'

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

Melaleuca gives its audit interns a great opportunity to add value in creative and new ways. There was no limit to what I could do and I know I will leave having left an impact.

What I wish was different

Advice

I think that people who do best at this internship are those who can take charge and really dig in. The company is willing to give responsibility and great leeway in what you do.

Graphic Designer Intern

March - July 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

They throw you right in, which can be overwhelming at first but gives you tons of experience in just a 3 month period. The people are really cool and helpful to work with. I have been able to create and learn so many things.

What I wish was different

They really need to hire more people on this team. There is so much work to do but not enough people which sometimes results in very long days.

Advice

Go into it expecting to work a lot and expecting to learn a lot of helpful information/skills.

R&D intern

May - August 2018 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

The building is beautiful. They have a gym and a subsided cafeteria onsite. Regarding my job experience, I learned a lot with my supervisors and colleagues. They wanted me to succeed. And I always had something to do, I was never bored, which is amazing for an internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I were different in the beginning. I was really shy and afraid to ask questions and learn more about everything. I wish I had asked one of the R&D directors to be my mentor during summer and learn more about the business overall.

Advice

Ask questions! They want to help you learn and succeed. They have a lot of experience they can share with you and help your future career.

Cost Accounting Intern

May - August 2018 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

I was able to work on a project that was beneficial to Melaleuca and it made a difference. I felt like my work was valuable and appreciated and this made me like doing the work even more.

What I wish was different

Wish I had more time to learn some of the other aspects in the cost accounting team and their roles.

Advice

Work hard and keep asking questions to learn more. There was so much learning involved that if I did not keep asking questions, I would not have learned the process well enough to look for ways to improve it.
