Textron

Finance Leadership Development Program Intern

May - August 2022 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Being a conglomerate company, Textron gave me exposure to a lot of industries.

What I wish was different

The projects I worked on were mostly accounting based. Very little financial application. I wish there was more financial application rather than accounting.

Advice

Your experience and the return offer depend heavily on your relationship with your manager.

Human Resource Business Partner Intern

May - August 2020 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

Great company to work for! They treated the interns so well. I had meaningful work that was challenging enough to let me know that they valued my time and effort. The managers/Senior Leadership Teams were extremely welcoming and engaging and cared about how they could assist you to meeting your personal future goals. They provided a housing stipend and a great hourly wage. i also received a full-time return offer in the middle of the pandemic. Could not speak highly enough of this company. If you walk in, work hard, are friendly and open to learning- Textron is your place to thrive.

What I wish was different

A longer internship (this was not Textron's fault) due to COVID-19

Advice

Be open to learning and growing professionally. Work hard and your hard work will likely be paid back in a full time return offer.

Sales Intern

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Make sure to do an internship! Doing an internship helped to show me what I do and don’t want to do after graduation. Prior to my internship, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do. After doing my internship, I realized that what I thought I wanted to do was exactly what I don’t want to do.

Avionics and Electrical Systems

What I liked

Flexible, friendly peers and a great learning experience.

What I wish was different

If I had been closer to finishing my degree I would have tried to stay and stay out of the food service/ restaurant industry!

Talent Acquisition Intern

June - August 2019 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people i was working with and the atmosphere of the office. Our team had a work hard, play hard mentality which I really enjoyed and felt like I fit right in. As soon as I came in there were already projects printed up for me to begin working on and could usually find something for me to help with when I had downtime. I also really liked moving somewhere new and getting that experience.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was having things to do towards the end of the summer. Once I finished all my projects there was little left for me to do.

Advice

One piece of advice I have is to always take the risk of going somewhere new. Taking an internship out of state gives you the feeling of moving away but only for a short period time and its not a full time commitment. You live and you learn, if you don't like it then you don't have to do it again.

Finance and Accounting Intern

June - August 2019 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the collegial environment at Textron Specialized Vehicles. All full time employees were happy to answer questions or set up informational interviews. There was a good infrastructure within the internship program with a speaker series, intern conference in Dallas, happy hours, and other events.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be willing to ask good questions. Asking relevant questions that you’ve looked into on your own first will set you apart and open doors for you.

Finance Intern

June - August 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Textron provided a great opportunity to interact with senior level executives as well as other interns. The work is exactly the work of professionals in the company, so you won’t be getting coffee for anyone.

What I wish was different

Work can be slow at times, especially in a finance/accounting role where sales and month end closing can be cyclical. Wichita also required some adjustments before feeling comfortable there.

Advice

Get there early and reach out to interns to make friends. It’s so important to connect early so you feel intergrated into the company from an early stage.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2018 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

I liked that my manager gave me a lot of meaningful work. I worked on projects that mattered to the business and were time-sensitive. However, I know not all the interns had this experience, depending on their manager. I also loved the culture, everyone is so nice and fun to be around!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more communication between functions and more resources invested into marketing there.

Advice

I would say if you are looking for a meaningful experience to apply here. You will learn a lot more than you can in the classroom. However, your internship will be what you make of it, so don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for more responsibility if you need it. If you tell your manager what you are looking to get out of your experience, they will be very receptive and work to make it happen.

.NET Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

It was a great chance to dive into the world of web and mobile development from front-end to back-end projects. I had the opportunity to fix bugs, ask a lot of questions, and ultimately submit code to the rollout of a new software application that the team was working on.

What I wish was different

The dynamic of each team at Textron's corporate level is very inconsistent. There seemed to be a lot of office politics going on, and less focus on wholesome work. I felt some employees loved it, and some disliked being there. I wish the culture was a bit more open-minded, perhaps even a bit more progressive. That being said, Textron is making efforts to implement feedback from their employees and they do not take it lightly.

Leadership and Organizational Development HR Intern

June - August 2018 • Providence, RI

What I liked

It was a great experience with a great company. They give you a lot of responsibility in your position and help you develop your skills. It was also a really great location.

What I wish was different

Advice

Reach out to previous interns, the interns you will be working with, or other people who have worked in similar roles to prepare you for an internship especially if you have never had an intern experience before. It can be kind of overwhelming if you don't have previous experience or don't know what to expect.
