Charles Schwab & Company

Financial Services Intern

June - August 2023 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I loved being able to learn more about the financial services industry while also doing real-world work for the teams I was assigned to. The training and mentorship intern receive at Schwab is outstanding. Everyone wants to see you succeed, so they make sure to implement training and take the time to mentor you before getting settled in!

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken the opportunity to shadow an employee who was client facing, as my internship role was more on the operational side of things. Take the time to get to know people in areas of your interest!

Advice

Take as many opportunities as possible to network and get to know others in the company! There are so many opportunities to meet people and learn more about their role/department they work in.

Marketing Intern

June - August 2020 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I had such a wonderful experience! The intern program was great snd allowed me to network with other interns in different areas of the company. We also got to learn a ton about Schwab, and meet so many amazing people. They provided us with every resource we could have needed and went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. The people are amazing, I was lucky to have had the best team!

What I wish was different

I honestly don’t have any complaints! Because of the pandemic we were moved to being fully virtual. They did a great job adapting to this and still made us feel like Schwab team members. However, I do wish we got to do something in person!

Advice

Meet as many people as you can! Everyone is always willing to meet you for 30 minute one-on-one coffee chats and I really loved setting these up each week!

Digital Services Intern

June - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Incredible internship program with lots of structure and support for the intern. I had a blast and learned so much. There was so much development that occurred, professionally and personally.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have more opportunities built into the program for interns to interact and connect during quarantine (virtual events, etc).

Advice

Week 0: Write down some goals that you have for yourself for the internship. Week 1 - 3: Make a list of people to have informational interviews with and start scheduling and having those. (This is highly encouraged to be done during work hours.) Of course, all that should be done as you complete your intro tasks as an intern. Week 4-6: Continue to be a sponge and keep networking with your Schwamily and fellow Schwinterns. Week 7-9: Follow up with those informational interviews as the end of the internship is near. Have those conversations if you're interested in being hired full-time and finish the internship strong owning the impact you've made on the team. Overall: Be patient with learning and take ownership of every task, no matter how big or small.

Asset Management Intern

June - August 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

It was such a fantastic experience! The team I worked with (Thomas Partners and Windhaven Strategies) was incredibly welcoming. I felt like I could approach anyone with questions, and they kept me busy with meaningful tasks. I also got to meet the founder of the strategies (Greg Thomas) as well as the president of Charles Schwab (Rick Wurster).

What I wish was different

I would have liked to spend a little more time directly working with the strategy/research team, but I got to spend a lot of time with the portfolio managers which was still incredibly valuable.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible, network with your coworkers, and just be friendly!

What I liked

They offered a variety of networking opportunity and created the best possible environment for being a virtual internship. You can tell the company really cares about their employees and about growing the future generation.

What I wish was different

I wish we could've done this in person rather than virtually. Obviously this is at no fault of the company, but I wish I could've gotten the in office experience.

Registered Investment Advisor Intern

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to educate myself on what the industry entailed, and how Charles Schwab played a role as the custodian of these registered investment advisors.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been able to learn more about their in-house advisory, Schwab Private Client. It was interesting to see how they were able to maintain connections with RIA's in the industry, yet still being direct competitor through this line of business.

Advice

I think this is a great way to really understand if this is the type of career you'd like to go into. One thing I wish I had learned prior was that this industry is extremely demanding and has low retention, which ultimately made me realize it wasn't the career path for me. I do think Charles Schwab does a great job of outlining the different facets you can fit in, however, should you decide a certain niche fits you best (i.e. financial planning, investment management, asset management).
