Walmart & Sam's Club

Associate

February - September 2018 • Greendale, WI

What I liked

There were very supportive and understanding supervisors who were willing to accommodate you and be flexible. It was a friendly work environment who made sure you received sufficient training before heading into your specific job.

What I wish was different

The hour long lunch breaks were a blessing and a curse. While they provided a nice relaxing lunch, you would be slotted for 9 hour days (given that you would take an hour long lunch). Personally, I would've liked to be slotted for an 8 hour day, and have a 30 minute lunch.

Advice

Communicate with your supervisors and co-workers, and make as many friends as possible.

Cashier

What I liked

All the coworkers are very friendly and I never have to think about work outside of work, which is really nice when in school.

What I wish was different

The managers run the whole front end of the store, so it’s frequently difficult to find them when you or a customer need help.

Advice

Always be your best self and friendly with the customers, and you’ll rarely get an angry customer.

Apparel Sales Associate

May 2019 • North Reading, MA

What I liked

I really liked getting to know a bunch of different individuals, both through meeting my coworkers, and meeting those who were simply trying to do their shopping. It was really fun to help them and get little tastes of their lives, and hopefully make them smile a little bit in the process. It also taught me a lot about being patient with people when they get frustrated, and figuring out how to stay calm. It was a really good experience!

Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2020 • San Bruno, CA

What I liked

Everything about Walmart was amazing. The way they included their interns in all events and then how everyone went out of their ways to help each other! I even got a chance to talk to the CEO Doug Macmillan 1:1 to play family feud game. The whole experience was amazing!

What I wish was different

I wish COVID did not happen and I wish I got a chance to go to the office and attend the internship in person.

Advice

Definitely take the risk of doing things it only makes you stronger! Never feel scared to ask questions as you never know what mark are you making on whom.

Cashier

April 2020 • Hudson, NY

What I liked

I loved the hours and flexibility given. They are understanding and patient when it comes to this and I think that is something important to have at a job! I also loved working with some of my coworkers!

What I wish was different

I wish the training was different. I think their training isn't efficient. If I weren't a cashier at my previous job, I would definitely have a hard time since their training wasn't great. I also notice other new cashiers struggling and it shows the training they do isn't efficient. I also think the CSMs should be around the cashiers more often. Sometimes a problem arises and we need them in order to continue and they are nowhere to be found. It really slows everything down and customers get frustrated.

Advice

I would say don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get things down right away. It takes time and don't forget to have patience. There are many times where you will run into angry and frustrated customers. If you stay calm you'll get through the day.

Cashier

June - August 2020 • Noblesville, IN

What I liked

The coworkers were really nice and helpful during training and making sure I knew what was going on.

What I wish was different

The managers did not know everyone's schedules as much as the workers themselves and did not interact with us or listen to us as much as the workers would have liked. We ended up managing our own break times and lunches to make sure there were enough workers and that there were enough workers even if someone was 20 minutes late. The managers also put us on edge because they were all trying to please the main boss, but since they weren't managing us, they couldn't do very well.

Advice

If your managers aren't doing a good job, do a better job than them, and then do their job. That way when you bring up issues with the manager they will understand how good of a worker you are and can do multiple positions.

What I liked

I enjoy shopping for customers and fulfilling their orders. It is very fun interacting with customers, loading their cars, and shopping around the store for their orders. I am able to work as a team and on my own.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job was a little less stressful, but my coworkers make it so worth the stress.

Advice

Be openminded and do not become overwhelmed. School is always important, so try to keep school above work, no matter the stress.

Customer Success Associate (Wholesale and Manufacturing)

What I liked

It was full time work in the garden center, so my job was tending to plants and helping (mainly) old people plant their gardens during the virus.

What I wish was different

Some of my coworkers gathered to gossip and avoid work, which I wish was different.

Advice
